Mental health foot forward – in short it is akin
to putting your best foot forward. As we are moving faster toward the new year
it is a great idea to take a personal inventory of where you are mentally. If
you live with mental illness yourself or take care of someone that is mentally
ill you tend to find that even on the best of days there can be still be
stress. How we react to stress and the tools we use to decrease our stress
levels can be a key to healthier living. We all know what stress does to our
heart, and other facets of our bodies – mind, body and soul.
How do you plan to handle your stress this new
year? By putting your best mental health foot forward start a plan of action to
either decrease immediate stressors or a plan to readily use when feeling stressed.
A few stress reducing tips:
- Plan a 10 minute break for yourself everyday
- Practice deep breathing exercises
- Start a new journal for the new year. Keep it small so you can carry it with you.
- Take a brisk walk to clear your mind
- Try using aromatherapy either around you in your home or a little bottle to keep with you of your favorite calming scent
There are a plethora of things to choose from, and
the idea is to find the thing or things that help you. What works for one
person won’t necessarily work for another. Don’t be afraid to experiment with
new ideas you come across. We can all be pleasantly surprised by what our mind
and body find comforting.
